How to Spend a Day on Bowen Island

With only a 20 minute ferry ride from Horseshoe Bay, Bowen Island is the ideal escape for a day trip or a relaxing weekend getaway. One of the best parts about visiting is how accessible it is, many visitors choose to walk onto the ferry and explore the main village of Snug Cove entirely by foot or bicycle. The village itself is compact, charming, and easy to navigate.

That said, if your ideal plan is to explore beyond the main hub and venture to the island’s hidden beaches, scenic viewpoints, and quieter corners, having access to a car can make a big difference. If you don’t own a car or a bike, there is also a local shuttle service available to help you get around.

Activities to Do

MIST

Tucked in the forest just minutes from Snug Cove, Mist offers a deeply restorative, private spa experience that feels both luxurious and grounded in nature. With only three spa units available, the space feels intentional and secluded, designed for stillness and reconnecting with yourself.

From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere invites you to slow down. From the thoughtfully curated tea blends to the peaceful forest views and the cozy warmth of the fireplace, every detail was designed to help you slow down and unwind. All curated to help you fully settle into the experience.

The circuit encourages a natural rhythm, moving between heat, cold, rest, find your breath and go at your own pace. It’s less about rushing through a checklist, and more about immersing yourself in each moment, even if it’s a bit uncomfortable (the cold plunge).

Mist offers both 90 minute and 120 minute sessions, and if your schedule allows it, we highly recommend the 120 minute experience. The extra time makes a noticeable difference, giving you the chance to fully relax without feeling rushed.

Before you leave, you’ll have the opportunity to purchase some of the products you used during your visit, perfect if you’re hoping to bring some of that calming experience home with you.

Hike Mount Gardner

While we didn’t hike Mount Gardner on this particular trip, it remains one of the island’s most popular and rewarding trails. With its panoramic views, it’s with the effort if you’re up for the challenge.

This roughly 6km trail is considered a difficult route and has a steady elevation gain. There are multiple access points, so it’s important to review and even download the correct map before heading out.

We recommend wearing good, sturdy shoes, and packing enough water and snacks, or lunch, to be on the trail for 3-4 hours. Once you reach the summit, you’ll find 2 helicopter pads that offer views in different directions, one facing east and one facing west. On a clear day, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the mainland, the Sunshine Coast, and the North Shore mountains.

As a reminder, if a helicopter is approaching, you must move 60 metres (200 feet) away from the landing pad for safety.

Killarney Lake Loop

If you’re looking for a more relaxed outing in nature, the Killarney Lake Loop is a beautiful and accessible option. This wide gravel path is just over 7km and typically takes 1-2 hours to complete.

The trail will take you through a quiet forest, offering occasional glimpses of the lake, and plenty of opportunities for birdwatching. While there are some sections with a gentle incline, the trail is considered easy and suitable for most people.

It’s a great choice if you’re looking for an immersive, peaceful walk without the intensity of a summit hike.

Beaches

Bowen Island is home to a surprising number of beaches, each with its own unique charm. Many feature driftwood logs or benches, making them perfect places to sit, relax, and watch the waves roll in. Most of the beaches have pebble shores, with only a few having sandy ones, unless you’re comfortable laying on rocks it might be a good idea to pack a chair or expect to sit on a log.

Whether you’re chasing sunrise or sunset, there’s no shortage of beautiful spots to choose from. Some of our favorites include Bowen Bay, Lighthouse Beach, and Tunstall Bay, these 3 are especially lovely for sunset.

If you’re an early bird and want to catch sunrise, Pebbly Beach and Cates Bay are wonderful options. You can enjoy a quiet morning walk, beachcomber, or just listen to the waves move the pebbles. Alder Cove is another lovely stop if you’re hoping to find some sand!

Cates Bay

Sea Kayaking

If you’re looking to experience Bowen Island from a different perspective, getting out on the water is a must. Bowen Island Sea Kayaking offers a variety of options, including guided ocean kayaking, rent kayaks, and lessons.

Paddling along the coastline allows you to explore hidden coves and nearby inlets while keeping an eye out for local wildlife. Depending on the time of year, you may spot seals, seabirds, or even the occasional dolphin or harbor porpoise.

Where to Grab Coffee and Food

Snug Cafe

Snug Cafe is a cozy and popular spot in the heart of Snug Cove. If you’re planning on ordering a full breakfast here, keep in mind that the kitchen opens at 8am. However, you can enjoy a light breakfast from their many display case which is stocked with a wide selections of baked goods.

We highly recommend trying one of their croissants! They’re the perfect treat to go with a morning coffee.

Tell Your Friends Cafe

Located just to the right as you step off the ferry, Tell Your Friends Cafe is another lovely option for coffee and breakfast. With its welcoming atmosphere and scenic harbour views, it’s an ideal first stop as you arrive on the island.

Their selection of baked goods and treats makes it easy to grab something delicious and enjoy it by the water.

Bowen Cider House

If you’re looking for a refreshing drink, Bowen Cider House has you covered! Offering a range of locally crafted ciders alongside a thoughtfully curated food menu, it’s a great spot for a casual lunch or afternoon break.

With both indoor and covered outdoor seating, it’s a comfortable option year-round. We shared the Ploughman’s Board for a light lunch, and enjoyed it with the Granny Cowan cider.

Shops to Explore

Snug Cove offers a variety of charming local shops, many featuring handmade goods and artisan products. It’s worth taking the time to wander through and support local makers, you never know when you’ll find your next favorite mug or soap.

Some of our favorite stores include The Ruddy, Narwhal, Union Steamship Gift Store & Chandlery, Tosh Home & Garden, and Wren Boutique.

If you’re looking for additional shopping, head up the road to Artisan Square, which is just a few minutes by car or about a 15 minute walk. This vibrant square offers up to 15 shops, galleries, and wellness services, as well as Artisan Eats Bakery & Cafe. It’s a great place to spend some time browsing, enjoying a beverage, or soaking in the creative energy.

Leaving the Island

The return ferry is first come, first serve. Check return sailing times to ensure you make it on at your desired time.

We hope you enjoy your time on the island as much as we did.
